Geography

History

Phoenicians and Greeks were trading along the Spanish coast around 1,100 BC. After this the Iberian Peninsula was first under the rule of Carthage and then the Romans for six centuries. After the Roman Empire, the Visigoths, from central Europe, occupied most of the Peninsula. At the beginning of the 8th century the Arabs stayed for more than 800 years. In the 15th century the union between Isabella of Castile and Ferdinand of Aragon marked the opening of a period of growing success for Spain. During the 16th and the 17th centuries the Spanish Empire become the world's foremost power, and a very important presence in European politics. The Spanish civil war took place in 1936-1939. After Franco’s death in 1975, Spain carried out the transition to democracy. In 1986, Spain joined the European Union.

Culture

Spain’s culture is a melting pot of influences: Phoenicians, Greeks, Romans, Celts, Visigoths and Arabs, all of them have left their mark in on the country resulting in Spain having the second largest number of Unesco World Heritage Sites and the largest number of World Heritage Cities. Valencia, a very dynamic Mediterranean city with some of the most striking architecture in Spain. Enjoy paella in one of the fantastic restaurants along the beach. Outdoor. Being the second most mountainous country in Europe, Spain offers you many opportunities for trekking, hiking, mountain biking, horse riding, climbing and walking in the Pyrenees, Gredos and the Picos de Europa.
Water Sports. Having more than 4,000 km of coastline. Tarifa is the perfect place for windsurfing and Bilbao is the best in Europe for surfing . Sailing, swimming, water-skiing and scuba diving can be done at all seaside resorts. Inland there are many places to go rafting and canoeing.
Fishing. Excellent opportunities for fishing throughout the country, barbell, perch, pike and trench. Asturias contains some of the best salmon rivers in Europe.
Golf. Spain has over 200 golf courses designed by the most famous golfers like Jack Nicklaus or Severiano Ballesteros. The Spanish climate allows you to play golf all year around.
Winter Sports. From the Pyrenees in the north to Sierra Nevada in the south, Spain offers great opportunities for skiing and snowboarding.
