Located in the centre of Southeast Asia, Thailand is truly at the heart of the region. Looking over a map of Thailand will reveal a country whose borders form the rough shape of an elephant’s head: the head and ears forming the mostly landlocked northern and eastern provinces and the trunk going down the Malaysian peninsula, between the Andaman Sea and the Gulf of Thailand.
The history of Thailand as we know it; began when the kingdoms of Lan Na (Chiang Rai/Chiang Mai) and Sukhothai, the first truly independent Thai Kingdoms, established highly developed societies in the North and Central regions of Thailand in the 13th and 14th centuries.
Known as Siam until 1939, Thailand is the only Southeast Asian country never to have been colonised by a foreign power, and is fiercely proud of the fact. A turbulent 20th century witnessed the transition to a system of constitutional monarchy, currently overseen by Head of State, the King.
The country's dominant religion is Buddhism, so it is very common to find monks dressed in orange and marble, stone or golden Buddha’s. The prevailing type of Buddhism in Thailand is Theravada school, which emphasizes the individual's potential to reach nirvana without the help of saints or gurus. A visit to one of their temples involves getting properly dressed: no shorts and shirts.
Thailand has so many interesting cities. Just a few of them are:
Bangkok, Thailand's bustling, frenetic capital, known as Krung Thep.
Ayutthaya, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, a historical city.
Chiang Mai, the heart of Lanna culture.
Chiang Rai, gateway to the Golden Triangle and mountain trekking.
Pattaya, one of the main tourist destinations, known for its rough nightlife.
Sukhothai, Thailand's first capital, amazing ruins.
Surat Thani, home of the Srivijaya Empire, gateway to the Samui archipelago.
Ko Chang, once a quiet island, now undergoing major tourism development
Ko Lipe, small Island in the middle of Tarutao National Park, amazingly unspoilt with great reefs and beaches
Khao Sok National Park, one of the most beautiful wildlife reserves in Thailand
Khao Yai National Park, take a night time jeep safari spotting deer or visit the spectacular waterfalls
Krabi Province, beach and water sports Mecca in the south, includes Ao Nang, Rai Leh, Ko Phi Phi and Ko Lanta
Phuket, the original Thai paradise island, now very developed but still with some beautiful beaches
Thai massage. “Pampering”, the traditional Thai massage, has a history of more than 2,500 years. The masseur uses his or her hands, elbows, feet, heels and knees to exert pressure and releasing blockages that may exist, allowing a free flow of energy through the body.
Outdoors and Water Sports. Ko Tao, Ko Samui, Ang Thong National Marine Park and the Sibilian Islands are becoming the scuba diving centres in Asia. Snorkelling can be done at pretty much at every beach, but coral reefs of the Similian Islands are particularly worthwhile.
Sea canoeing allows you to get into areas unexplored by the tourist masses. For climbing, the limestone cliffs of Rai Leh are arguably among the best in the world.
Wildlife. Thailand has much to offer, from tigers and elephants to monkeys and birds, there are many new species to discover in Thailand.
Golf. Thailand offers over two hundred golf courses with high standards. Membership and course fees are exceptionally low.
Sightseeing. Thai dance is considered a show full of expressiveness; Thai dance has generally been linked to agriculture and religious celebrations. Visit historical places, like Ayuthia ruins, once known as the "Pearl of the Orient", the artistic, spiritual and military in Southeast Asia and Thailand's capital from 1350 until its destruction by the Burmese four centuries later
