Fowl Green Farm is a traditional hill sheep farm close to the village of Commondale. It sits on a south facing slope above the beck, at the end of a two mile bridle path which takes us to the next village.
Accommodation is in four cottages, set around the sides of a courtyard. Chickens roam freely around the yard which has outside patio areas with barbeques and garden areas.

This is a working family farm. Animals include pigs, sheep, free range hens and a fold of highland cattle, not forgetting Nell the sheep dog. Fowl Green Farm is ideal as a base for walking, riding and cycling. A safe place for children to play, there are fields for ball games or just to play in, streams to paddle in, trees to climb.

Description of Interior

The Barn: sleeps 6 and used to be part barn, part milking parlour and part granary, now it is the largest cottage of 4 and has 3 double bedrooms, one downstairs and two upstairs. Central heating is under floor, which means no radiators and no cold spots plus plenty of hot water. The living area is modelled on the large farmhouse kitchen and has everything in one room, sitting, dining and cooking areas. All food preparation areas are accessible from a wheelchair and have space underneath them - so no excuse not to help with the washing up. The kitchen is well equipped and includes fridge/freezer, free standing cooker, microwave/grill.

Each bedroom is comfortably furnished with double or twin beds. Some of the furniture is old and has been restored. The bathroom, which is downstairs, is easily accessible with plenty of space. It consists of toilet (with grab rails), washbasin with lever taps set into a vanity unit and a walk in shower. The barn has retained the style of its original function with bare stone walls, original beams and natural slate

The cottage is ETC 3 – 4 *, mobility level 3, hearing and vision level 1. All rooms have wide doors and there is level entry. There is a satellite TV, DVD player, Hifi and a selection of games, books, tapes, cd’s and dvd’s. A cot and high chair are available if required. A wheel – in shower chair and toilet riser seat are also available. Linen and towels are provided at no extra cost and all heating is included.

Garden and Exterior

The farm is set in the North York Moors national park, in the Whitby district and surrounded by Heartbeat country. The sea is just 7 miles away.

This is a working family farm which was bought by the family in 1900. Livestock includes sheep, pigs, free range hens and a fold of highland cattle, not forgetting Nell, our sheep dog. We are also part of a conservation scheme with plantings of oak trees and wildflower meadows. We have discovered rare orchids and other species of wild flower since we excluded sheep from our woods.

Throughout we have created wheelchair accessible footpaths and picnic sites in woodland, meadow and stream side areas, so that all the family can enjoy the tranquillity of the countryside. The area is rich in wildlife including deer, rabbits and other small animal, a wide variety of birds and wild flowers.

Local Area

The area is very popular with artists and photographers, many of whom have galleries displaying their work locally.

The farm is set in the North York Moors National Park, in the Whitby district and surrounded by Heartbeat country. It is one of several pretty villages set in the Esk Valley all of which cater for visitors with quaint pubs, tea shops and attractions like the Esk Valley Steam Railway.

The nearest seaside is Saltburn, only 7 miles away, a Victorian spa town with a funicular lift down the cliff to the sea and the pier. This seaside is good for digging and paddling and has a thriving surfers’ culture and artists’ colony.

Further along the coast are the historical villages of Staithes, Runswick Bay and Sandsend, which lead on to the beautiful and ancient port of Whitby. Built on a steep hillside with the Abbey perched on top of the cliff, 199 steps up, there are cobbled streets, attractive shops and famous links with Captain Cook and Dracula. Whitby has regular folk and music festivals.

Fowl Green Farm is also close enough to visit York, the beautiful and ancient capital cityof Yorkshire and Durham, an equally beautiful and historic capital city of the county of Durham.
