This house is a fusion of ancient medieval history and gloriously sumptuous modern luxury.

Although almost completely rebuilt and restored, there are parts of the building which are said to pre-date the castle walls, which were built in 1148. Open the house up to the courtyard in the Summer months and let the sunshine in, or switch on the under-floor heating in the Winter and enjoy it in complete comfort.

All three bedrooms are double rooms with huge hand-made wrought-iron chandeliers and medieval wall-sconces. The beds are modern and very comfortable, with excellent quality mattresses, generously soft linens and crisp freshly-pressed bedding.

Throughout the house try to spot the genuine pieces of 17th century furniture while enjoying the feel of the modern velvets and satins of the contemporary pieces.

In addition to a small shower room downstairs, the house boasts a huge upstairs bathroom with jacuzzi, hand-painted tiles and stained glass windows.

Feel like royalty in this genuinely gorgeous home full of quirky personality and glamour. Most craftsmen and artists are local people from neighbouring villages and towns.

For added convenience there is a TomTom sat-nav in the house which guests are welcome to use during stay if they hire a car.

The wine cellar is well-stocked with over 200 bottles of Portuguese wines. All bottles are price-marked and guests should please leave empty bottles and payment on the kitchen table before departure.

The courtyard has comfortable seating, a big table and a huge umbrella. There is also a Webber barbecue and a bread oven.

The house has a private enclosed courtyard and backs onto the Castle wall. It has significant historical value and is in a National Heritage site. It is a listed building, completely restored.

Local Area

On the Silver Coast in the center of Portugal, Obidos came to be known as the "Wedding City' due to a tradition of the Portuguese kings gifting the town and the castle to their queens as a bridal gift. Every queen of Portugal until 1834 was given Obidos as part of her dowry.

The walled town is picturesque with whitewashed houses lining the cobbled streets and splashes of vibrant colour from a variety of exotic bushes spilling over from private, walled gardens.

Obidos castle only has 200 inhabitants but is visited by thousands every year.

Recomended Must-do

Try the local cherry liqueur “Ginga” which is served in yummy chocolate cups. These are available in many of the coffee shops inside the castle. Do the walk along the top of the castle wall. The view is breath-taking. Try “pasties de nata”, the best custard tarts in the world…and take some home when you leave.

Places to visit

Peniche -
Peniche is known for its long winding beaches and sought for recreational activities and sports such as surfing, windsurfing , body-boarding or kite surfing.

Peniche has very good waves. Supertubes has the most popular wave in the region, with very fast and powerful (tubular) waves, one of the best in Europe; some call it the "European Pipeline". The annual Billabong surfing competition takes place every July. Peniche, with its typical harbour, its white windmills and chapels and large sand beaches is just perfect for a day out. It also has the best seafood in Portugal!

A short ferry-ride will take you to the tiny Berlenga island, a marine reserve with clear blue water, ideal for diving and snorkeling.

This picturesque seaside village is a popular tourist attraction. It has long sandy beaches considered by some to be among the best beaches of Portugal. The town used to be known for its traditional costumes worn by the fishermen. Their wives wore the traditional headscarf and embroidered aprons over seven flannel skirts in different colours. These traditional clothes are still worn but nowadays mainly by the older women. In the past women would dance on the beaches to welcome the men back from their fishing trips. Although the dance is well known throughout Portugal, unfortunately nowadays women no longer spontaneously do those daily dances. The town consists of three parts: A Praia (the beach), O Sítio (at the top of the cliff) and Pederneira (the old town). The Praia and Sítio areas are linked by the Nazaré Funicular train.

The city of Alcobaça became notable after the first king of Portugal, Afonso Henriques, decided to build a church to celebrate the conquest of Santarém to the Moors, in 1147. The church later evolved into the Monastery of Alcobaça, one of the most magnificent gothic monuments in the country. In the church are the tombs of King Pedro I and his murdered mistress Inês de Castro. Over the centuries this monastery has played a significant role both culturally and historically.

Monastery of Batalha
A few kilometers to the north of Alcobaça is the Monastery of Batalha, another wondrous gothic building constructed in memory of a different important battle, that of Aljubarrota.

Caldas da Rainha
Commonly known as one of the most beautiful of Portugal's medieval towns, Caldas da Rainha has its' original fruit and vegetable market square which operates every morning, including weekends. The town is well known for its pottery, museums, churches and excellent cakes and sweets. Park D. Carlos I is a large park in the center of town. The José Malhoa Museum sits in the middle of the park. The park contains a doughnut-shaped pond with a small island in the center. Visitors can rent rowboats on the pond and feed the swans.

Sports in the area
Surfing is world class in Peniche and Nazare. There is a wind-surfing school in Foz do Irelho. There are excellent golf courses very close to Obidos, ie "Bom Sucesso", "Golden Eagle", Praia d'El Rei" and "Campo Real".

Bicycling is common in the area with lots of picturesque trails. Rent a bike by calling the tourism office (+351) 262 959231

A beautiful modern but rustically decorated restaurant with fantastic views, a huge selection of wines and mouthwatering cuisine. All the large wooden cabinets are hand-made by the same cabinet-maker who built the cabinets in our kitchen.

Caravela - Sao Martinho do Porto
Rua Candido dos Reis, Sao Martinho do Porto Tel: (+351) 262 98 92 94
My favourite sea-side restaurant. The fish and seafood is truly wonderful and reasonably priced. Very informal and friendly.

There are many bars, clubs and late-night spots with beach-frontage in Foz do Arelho and surrounding places. The beach bars in Peniche are also good fun.

(Any taxi will be able to take you to restaurants or bars outside of Obidos, please book the taxi during the day for your evening outings).
