Local Area

The Dordogne is the home to spectacular sites and monuments which provide endless opportunities for cultural discovery. The natural beauty of the region is unsurpassed, the scenery is breathtaking!
Rivers cut meandering paths through the limestone valleys, leaving fantastic cliffs with caves and rock shelters that man has used as dwellings for thousands of years. Many of the caves are endowed with prehistoric paintings or engravings.

The Vezere Valley in the "Perigord Noir" with it's more than 150 sites of interest, 15 inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List, is the "Prehistoric Capital of the World".

There are numerous "plus beaux villages de France", including Beynac, La Roque-Gageac, St-Leon-sur-Vezere, Limeuil, Domme, Monpazier and Belves which all merit a visit. The town of Sarlat is the capital of the Black Perigord, has been restored to its 17th-18th-century magnificence.

Nearly every village has its market day and the markets are some of the finest in France. As you wander through the colourful markets, your senses will be aroused by the perfume of herbs and spices, you have an opportunity to buy fresh food, often from the local producers. During the summer many towns also have nocturnal markets (marché nocturne) where you can eat, drink and listen to music in a communal atmosphere.

Of course, one of the big draws of the region is the gastronomy. The Perigord has been called the gastronomic capital of France. Here, foie gras and truffles are nearly ordinary fare and every town has shops filled to overflowing with these local treasures. You'll find lots of duck and goose cooked in different ways. The Perigord is also famous for its chestnuts, walnuts, mushrooms and strawberries. Restaurants abound, waiting for you to try the famous and reputed "cuisine périgourdine".

Canoeing and kayaking on the rivers are very enjoyable, and there are plenty places to rent canoes. There are also places to rent bicycles, go horse riding, play tennis, golf or simply go walking.

The Dordogne is compact and full of things to do. It's a great place for all the family.
