The island of Cyprus is situated very close to Turkey, Syria and Lebanon, in the north-eastern end of the Mediterranean Sea. Cyprus is divided into two mountain masses with a central plain between them, known as the Mesaoria Plain.
Remains of the oldest known settlement in Cyprus dates from the neolitic age, 5000 B.C. During the 12th and 11th centuries B.C., several waves of Achaean Greeks came to settle on the island bringing with them the Greek language, their religion, their customs. Around 334 B.C., Alexander the Great defeated Persia and Cyprus became part of his empire. After a series of struggles for power, between Alexander's generals, Cyprus eventually comes under the Hellenistic state of the Ptolemies of Egypt, and belongs from then onward to the Greek Alexandrine world. Cyprus becomes part of the Roman Empire, first as part of the province of Syria, then as a separate province under a proconsul. After the division of the Roman Empire, Cyprus becomes part of the Eastern Roman Empire, known as Byzantium, with Constantinople as its capital.
Venetians saw Cyprus as a last bastion against the Ottomans in the east Mediterranean, and fortified the island.
At the end of the 19th Century, United Kingdom takes over the administration of the island until 1914 when UK anexes Cyprus. After the dissolution of the Ottoman Empire en 1925, Cyprus was made a Crown Colony until its independance in 1960.
Cyprus has been part of the European Union since 2004 and uses the Euro currency.
More than 10,000 years of history make it impossible to even begin to describe the Cypriot culture. The result is hundreds of amazing archaeological sites in Cyprus, representing all its historical periods: Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, Venetians, Ottomans, and more.
Cyprus has four large cities:
Nicosia (Lefkosia) the capital. Has a bit of everything: archaeological treasures, beaches with a vibrant nightlife, fantastic little cafes and taverns. Mosques and palm trees give an oriental atmosphere to the old city.
Larnaca (Larnaka), the oldest city in Cyprus was built over the ancient city of Kition, a rich port during Phoenician times, its remains can be seen today. Stroll along the palm-lined sea-front promenade and enjoy a relaxing time at one of its pretty pavement cafes.
Limassol (Lemesos), the old town is the heart of the city with its narrow streets radiating out from the old fishing harbour. All sorts of discos, clubs, bars and taverns are open all the year round in the old city or along the coastal walkway.
Paphos (Pafos) is a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Centre, was the birthplace of Aphrodite, the Greek goddess of love and beauty. Small enough to visit on foot admiring all its archaeological legacy, then recover your energy in one of its delightful restaurants having one of the best Mezes in Cyprus.
