Local Area
Darling Street goes on forever and it is all worth exploring – the east to the Ferry or back along west to Rozelle – lots of eating both ways. There are surprise pockets of parks not forgetting Gladstone Park just past the main shopping area, opposite the church (where they have the famous Saturday markets). There is a good play area and also swings on the other side of the school.
If you do not want to cook, there is every kind of food for every time of the day -for either, feet under the table or take home. If you are cooking, wander around the corner to the green grocer for neighbourly service and fresh food, and down the hill to Ralph’s Delicatessen for cheeses, and all the good things. Keep walking to Emiles Fruit Shop and TJ the butcher who are side by side. TJs is a must for organic meat and game.
Check out the Dawn Fraser baths on the harbour next to Elkington Park, Birchgrove. Great for children but closed in winter. There are good walks around the waterfront. Try the ‘industrial archaeology” of the old Morts Dock in Mort Park – great open space to kick a ball. Walk down Rowntree Street and turn right at the old corner shops. You can continue to explore the waterfront if you go to the far western point and take the stairs up to the roadway, walk down the road and into Birchgrove Oval. You can find your way home doing a circle.
Also try another walk, this time go down Rowntree to the roundabout, find your way up Macquarie Terrace, turn left at the school and then right at the Dawn Fraser Swimming Pool sign and follow the waterfront to Elkington Park – that is just a start!
Further a field, Luna Park and Darling Harbour are a short ferry ride away.
